“It is an honor and privilege to serve as Vermont State Director and help ensure that men, ages, 18-25, across our state are aware of the federal law and register with the Selective Service System.”

Rosslyn, VA: Today, active community leader and former U.S. Army Reserve officer, Rebecca Baczewski, was sworn in as the Vermont State Director by retired U.S. Air Force COL Thomas Kenney, Selective Service System Acting Associate Director of Operations and Region I Director. Ms. Baczewski was nominated for this leadership position by Vermont Governor Phil Scott. The swearing-in ceremony was held this morning at the Burlington Air National Guard Base.

“Having served in the US Army Reserve and counseled Army and Air Reserve component families in the areas of family readiness and resilience training, I appreciate and respect the sacrifices and commitment that our young men and women in uniform make every day to defend America. In this same light, it is an honor and privilege to serve as Vermont State Director to help ensure that men, ages, 18-25, across the state are aware of the federal law and register with the Selective Service System,” Ms. Baczewski said.

Ms. Baczewski, who is a billing specialist for The Lifestyle Athlete and Rehabilitation Clinic in Burlington, has been an active volunteer in both local and military communities. Her roles included lead volunteer at the Vermont Air National Guard 158th Fighter Wing, Girls on the Run coach, German American Women’s Club media specialist, and Americans Working Around the Globe Executive Board Member.

COL Kenney said, “Ms. Baczewski has dedicated a lifetime of service to her country and community, serving as an officer in the Army Reserve, as a family readiness counselor for a U.S. Army Garrison in Germany, and as a youth sports coach. She is a true leader who we are fortunate to have as a teammate at the Selective Service System. She’s the right person for the job and will lead our efforts in Vermont to ensure all young men are registering with the Selective Service.”

Ms. Baczewski previously served as a Senior Family Support Assistant for the State of Vermont and, when in Stuttgart, Germany, assisted the U.S. Army Garrison with resiliency training as part of service member in-processing. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX. She resides in Burlington, VT with her husband, David.

Federal law requires all male citizens, as well as male non-citizens residing in the U.S., to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. At 26, a man becomes too old to register. Those who do not comply are ineligible for numerous federally funded benefits, educational benefits, job training, government employment, and U.S. citizenship for male immigrants.
