Selective Service Act Anniversary

This month is the 100 year anniversary of President Woodrow Wilson signing the Selective Service Act.  Shown below is an excellent article written by Mr. Jerome Greer Chandler, titled “Selective Service System is Guardian at the Gate” and reprinted with permission from the VFW.  It is also published in the May, 2017 issue of the VFW magazine.

Donald M. Benton Appointed Director of the U.S. Selective Service System

(Arlington, VA)  Mr. Donald M. Benton was sworn in April 13, 2017, by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr., at the Supreme Court to become the 13th Director of the U.S. Selective Service System. He was accompanied by his wife, several family members, and administration officials as he took the oath of office on his family’s 120-year-old bible.

World War I Draft Lottery Bowl

The Minnesota Historical Center in St. Paul recently unveiled their new World War I (WWI) Exhibit. One of the highlights of the exhibit is the original Draft Lottery Bowl used during WWI draft lotteries. Mr. Adam J. Copp, Acting Deputy Director, accompanied by Mr. Brian McHugh, Public Affairs Specialist, were in attendance for the opening. Mr. Copp addressed the audience and discussed the important significance of the Draft Bowl.

Mr. Adam J. Copp joined the Selective Service System as the Associate Director for Operations

Mr. Adam J. Copp joined the Selective Service System as the Associate Director for Operations during March 2016.  A career-member of the Senior Executive Service, he is responsible for the development and implementation of agency plans, policies, programs, and operations designed to fulfill U.S. Armed Forces manpower requirements in the event of a national emergency and for the management of an alternate service program.  Additionally, Mr. Copp manages core processes in data management, information technology, registration compliance and verification, mobilization plans, and training.

Selective Service Ranked First Among Small Agencies in FISMA Report to Congress

Selective Service does it again, passing the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA) audit. The recent FY 2015 FISMA audit determined the agency was in full compliance with FISMA requirements, with no deficiencies reported. In the Office of Management and Budget’s Annual Report to Congress, dated March 18, 2016, on the Federal Information Security Modernization Act, Selective Service ranked number one among the small federal agencies.
